"Every physical book sold needs a barcode. Placing a correct barcode on your cover wrap ensures retail checkout scanners can read your ISBN and pricing details."
Core Key Takeaways
- Structuring the EAN-13 ISBN Barcode
- Pricing Extension Codes: Fixed vs. Blank
- Placement and Sizing Coordinates on Back Covers
1. Structuring the EAN-13 ISBN Barcode
EAN-13 barcodes encode your ISBN. A smaller 5-digit extension can encode your retail price, telling scanners exactly what to charge.
- Encode your ISBN inside a standard EAN-13 barcode format.
- Use the 5-digit extension to lock prices (e.g., 51495 for $14.95).
- Avoid scaling or stretching barcodes to prevent scan errors.
2. Pricing Extension Codes: Fixed vs. Blank
Use code 90000 if your price is variable, or encode your specific retail price to meet wholesale requirements of bookstores.
