Core Key Takeaways
- Understanding the BISAC Subject Hierarchy
- Matching BISAC Codes to KDP and IngramSpark
- Researching Competitor Classification Patterns
1. Understanding the BISAC Subject Hierarchy
BISAC codes use a nested structure (e.g., FICTION / Mystery & Detective / Cozy). Choose specific subcategories rather than broad headings to reduce competition.
- Select up to three specific BISAC codes for catalog registries.
- Match codes to the themes and target reader markets of your book.
- Review annual updates to the Book Industry Study Group registry.
2. Matching BISAC Codes to KDP and IngramSpark
Amazon and IngramSpark use BISAC codes to map your book to search categories. Mismatched codes can hide your book from relevant searches.
